How do I know if my ceiling light fixture box in Master bedroom can support the weight of a ceiling fan?

This is a home built in the 60’s. The current ceiling box looks like if has a 1" bolt through it threaded tightly to a board with a nut. All other bedrooms in this house already have fans. So I don’t think it is a large jump to think that this box will be able too. The box is also very stable when I pull on the fixture set screws.

Actually you should have no problems.

The way you described the existing box it is the type that have a "bar" that is mounted in between the joists/studs in the ceiling and the large nut holds the box in place on that bar. That is the exact same set-up (But built better) that the fan brace kits you buy today.

Hope this helps,

Dave

  1. Keep removing the old fixture until you can locate a stud. You are going to want to anchor your new fixture to a stud.

  2. Better safe than sorry, call an electrician. They usually bill about $75-85 an hour (at least where I live) and something like this will be about an hour, hour-and-a-half.

  3. A ceiling fan takes a heavier-duty fixture box than a regular light, so you will have to replace the box.

With a ceiling fan, it is not just the weight that you have to consider, but also the rotational motion that will come about with the fan’s operation.

Completely remove all of the existing hardware until you can see the stud. Measure the stud. The ceiling fan box should tell you what the recommened stud size is. (If it isn’t on the box, then it should be on the company’s web site.) Most ceiling fans require being fastened to at least a 2×8 (and that’s probably what you have), but some fans are larger or smaller.

If you can’t find this information, or you are unable to measure your stud, or you are having any problems at all, then I would recommend calling a professional.
