Why would a light bulb explode? One of the 5 bulbs in my bathroom light fixture exploded when we flipped it on

The light fixture in our master bathroom holds 6 bulbs. Currently, there are 5 GE brand "Reveal" 40 watt, medium base, blunt shape, decorative bulbs. For some reason, when we turned on the lightswitch tonight, the bulb in the center exploded, scattering glass bulb pieces everywhere.

This is unusual but it does happen when the bulb burns out. If the glass develops a leak since there is a vacuum in the envelope of the bulb it draws air into the bulb and if it is humid air the moisture expands rapidly when heated as does the air creating pressure which will shatter the bulb.

  2. It happens every now and then could be your wiring but most likely cause is a defective bulb.

Btw easy way to remove is cut a potato in half dry it off and then with the lights OFF stick the potato on the glass shardes to unscrew the remaining light bulb.
